Informing health services

Anyone providing who was providing healthcare services to the person who died will need to be informed of the death, including:

  • Family doctor, if not already informed
  • Dentist
  • Any hospital or medical professional such as podiatrist (chiropodist)

Make sure any booked appointments have been cancelled. Although most hospitals' computer systems should cancel other appointments in the same hospital, this does not always work immediately especially if the death occurred at night or at a weekend and it will not automatically notify other hospitals.

It can be upsetting to receive a letter addressed to the deceased stating that they failed to attend a hospital appointment. Deaths in hospital should be notified to the patient's GP by the hospital within a short time of the death, but again you may prefer to take responsibility for this call yourself.
