Carer support

As a carer, the pressure on you for providing support for your relative, partner or friend is enormous. It is very important that you look after your health. There is financial, practical and emotional support available to you as a carer and the person you are caring for.

There are organisations which exist specifically to support carers:

http://www.carers.org/ is the website of the Princess Royal Trust for Carers which has much useful information and links to other carers organisations.

Emotional help

Although friends and family can provide emotional support at this difficult time, you may wish to also talk to a professional counsellor or to other carers in a similar position.

Financial help

If the person you are caring for has a progressive disease and they are not expected to live for more than six months, there are special rules for claiming to make sure they receive any benefits quickly and easily.

There are a variety of benefits to which someone may be entitled depending on their illness and the impact it has on them and their overall financial situation.

We can help you to locate your local Jobcentre Plus who can provide the necessary information and claim forms. It is also possible to claim some benefits electronically.

Macmillan Cancer Support has particular expertise in the financial support that may be available for people living with a cancer diagnosis. Click here for more information or call the Macmillan Benefits Helpline on 0808 801 0304. Lines are open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday from 10am-5pm and Wednesday 12pm-5pm.
